Opportunity to shine for college football stars with disabilities

Team19 Football Tournament

Students with learning disabilities from Chesterfield College took on teams from colleges across the region as part of an inter-college football tournament hosted at the Langer Lane sports facility today.

The competition was organised by the Student Management Team from Chesterfield College for Team 19 who have run the College’s 5v5 football league throughout the year and are finishing the year by organising a disability competition involving teams from Chesterfield College, Derby College, Buxton & Leek College and Stockport College.

Both teams from Chesterfield College beat rivals Derby College in the semi-finals and faced each other in the final before being crowned the tournament champions. In a presentation at the end of the tournament

Will Hughes, College Sport Maker at Chesterfield College said : “It has been a fantastic competition and there was some great football on show. I am really proud of the achievements of the college team this year. It is a real testament to everyone involved in developing the skills and confidence of the team to take part when you see them competing in tournaments like this. The partnership with Derbyshire FA, Chesterfield FC Community Trust and TeamNineteen has been a real winning formula.”

Chesterfield FC Community Trust has been coaching the students from Chesterfield College every week this academic year boosting their fitness levels, football skills and confidence levels. With this expert coaching, the Chesterfield College team recently got through to the semi-finals of the FA People’s Cup Colleges Disability Competition at St. George’s Park (the home of the national football squads).

Pete Collins, Football Development Officer (Children and Young People) at Derbyshire County FA said: “The Team 19 programme has provided Chesterfield College with the opportunity to increase recreational participation in football and futsal amongst students on a weekly basis. This has been in no small part down to the group of students who have taken on the planning, organisation and delivery of Team 19 with fantastic results so far. The Team 19 Festival only strengthens my view on this. The students have used their initiative and provided additional playing opportunities in developing this disability festival, catering for students with disabilities and specific needs from across their own college and others. Derbyshire County FA are proud to be working with Chesterfield College on the Team 19 programme and want to highlight the success of both the participants and the Leaders who have run the programme by putting together a short promotional film of the day.”
