Celebrating our WorldSkills winners: Blake wins gold

Blake Robey

Blake Robey, gold medal winner in automotive refinishing at the recent national Skill Auto Competition part of the WorldSkills UK competition, started his journey to skills success in the automotive workshops of Chesterfield College. He is now working for Chartwells in Derby refinishing prestige brands such as Porsche, Bentley and Ferrari.

Blake’s skills were soon identified when he joined college. He moved up a level of study within a few weeks and soon found himself an apprenticeship where he was able to use what he had learnt in the classroom out in the real world of work.

Tutors at college recognised his talent and supported him to take part in the regional and national Skill Auto Competition in partnership with WorldSkills UK. The tasks set as part of the competition challenged competitors to demonstrate the skills necessary to work in the high-end refinishing market.

Blake said “Taking part in the competition has boosted my confidence and my career. It has opened up so many prospects that I didn’t have before. I have proved what I am capable of to myself and others. It feels great to be recognised for the work you do. ”
