Celebrating our WorldSkills UK winners : Jennifer's enchanting nails
Jennifer Jarvis got the competition bug after reluctantly competing regionally to demonstrate her skills in advanced nail art. After the regionals she was fired up and ready for the national World Skills UK competition at the Skills Show in Birmingham in November.
Jennifer was studying nail services in the Commercial Enterprise Department at Chesterfield College at the same time as working in 2 jobs and raising 2 children, when her tutors noticed her talent and persuaded her to compete.
Making the most of the expertise of fellow students and tutors at college who had competition experience Jennifer put in hours of preparation work. The competition theme was enchanted so she used her passion for 50 Shades of Grey to create acrylic nails representing elements of the story. The level of detail and the work she had carried out to prepare for the competition really impressed the judges and she won gold in the national competition.
Jennie told us: “World Skills was an amazing experience. Once I got over the nerves I loved every minute. It was really inspiring. I really enjoyed testing my skills on something that I could get really creative with. Competing gave me so much confidence. I am really proud of what I achieved – I wore my medal to the shops for a week! I am looking at the possibility of starting my own business now I know what I am capable of.”
