Apprentice proves vital in boosting local joinery business sales
From apprentice to marketing manager in just 18 months, Alex Briddon, age 21 from Alfreton, has made a big impact on sales at Derbyshire business, Gowercroft Joinery.
When the company decided to take on a business administration apprentice through Learning Unlimited, part of the Chesterfield College group, they knew they would get a chance to grow their own talent. What they didn’t realise is that their apprentice would radically improve their sales process in such a short space of time and become a vital component in their growth strategy.
Andrew Madge, Managing Director at Gowercroft said “We have seen considerable benefits from apprenticeships in our workshop, so it was a natural progression to expand that across into the offices. We now have three apprentices in the offices and they form a very integral part of our business. Alex came to us with limited experience but he had an excellent attitude.”
“Having the correct people and attitudes throughout the business is critical to our success. By hiring apprentices and developing them within the business, we can grow future leaders who embody our passion for quality and service. The reduced initial wage and the grants available make apprenticeships a cost-effective way of growing your business in the short term, whilst also giving the opportunity to mould valuable employees for the future.”
Alex told us: “When I first started my apprenticeship I did all the back office tasks related to sales; from monitoring spreadsheets to organising customer files and even making the tea. Learning this side of the job and studying meant I quickly progressed into leading the sales operations. There is no way I could have got this far as quickly by learning in a classroom. Doing the job and studying really does give you the perfect mix of theory and work experience to help you get ahead.”
Paul Champion, Operations Director from Learning Unlimited, added: “Gowercroft’s experiences prove that apprenticeships make good business sense. Particularly for small businesses who want to grow sustainably. They fill the skills gap in an affordable and effective way and can increase productivity significantly.”
As an apprenticeship provider, Learning Unlimited works with businesses to design and deliver a solution that is relevant to the needs of the business sectors in the region. They offer over 40 frameworks in areas as diverse as business administration to pharmacy services.
