Students organise Memory Cafe for the elderly
Our Health and Social Care students teamed up with Alzheimer’s Society last week to create a Memory Café for the elderly.
Students met in the Saints Parish Centre to welcome members of the Alzheimer Society and participated in a quiz, memory game and reminiscence activities arranged by the students.
It proved a successful and enjoyable morning for both the students and the elderly. It’s a great link to the community for college and the positive feedback we’ve had is encouraging. We’ve got another two sessions in February and a celebration event on the 11th March.
Here’s what Pamela thought of the experience:
I was very nervous before the first session as I didn’t know what to expect, but when I got chatting to the old couple I felt much more comfortable and then I couldn’t wait for session 2. I have learnt much more about Alzheimer’s and now I have decided that I would like to work towards a career caring for the elderly. It is really great that doing the reminiscence activities with the older adults can be used as evidence for Unit 6 – Creative and Leisure Activities for Older Adults, so we are being assessed whilst doing practical and fun activities.” Pamela Morehen – Entry level Health and Social Care.
