The digital skills gap inspired Sobee to work towards her degree

Sobee Kirk - graduation 17

Sobee Kirk graduated with a Foundation Degree in Applied Computing today and now has her sights firmly set on completing a full degree and getting a job in networking and security.

Sobee was looking for a career change and realised that digital skills were in high demand so she started to explore computing courses at Chesterfield College. Without much knowledge about computers but with a great deal of determination, Sobee started a level 2 course several years ago and has worked her way through the levels to achieve her foundation degree.

Juggling her current job as a nursing assistant with studying she is well on her way to getting the qualifications she needs to change her career.  She told us:

“I know there are plenty of interesting job opportunities out there for someone with the right qualifications which has kept me motivated to study. I have had really good support from the tutors and the course gave me the flexibility to continue working to fund this part of my education.  I know I wouldn’t have got the same support in a bigger university and it would have cost a lot more too.”

“I am really proud of my achievements. I never thought I would get this far. I am looking forward to starting work after my final year of study and I hope I can be a role model for other girls who might want to work in what is still a male dominated industry. ”
