University-level business course opens up a world of opportunities
Ashley Gregory told us how the path to the right course for her has given her the skills and experience she needs to go far.
“I completed my A Levels at school and then started college on a Level 3 fashion course as I was interested in how the industry worked. During the course I realised I really wasn’t interested in the making of clothes, just the business side of things so I looked at transferring to a more business focused course.
After speaking with the guidance team at college I was told about the HND in Business and as I had my A Levels I was eligible to start. It was the perfect fit for me as I wasn’t ready to go to university but it was going to get me to where I wanted to be. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.
Whilst giving me the skills I wanted, studying at college enabled me to save a lot of money. I could still get funding through student finance, I received a bursary and living at home meant I saved all of the rent costs usually associated with studying at university. It gave me a great head start as some of my peers still don’t have the skills that I picked up whilst at college.
I’ve since progressed to Sheffield Hallam University to study Events Management and Tourism which includes a sandwich year that gives me the opportunity to do an international placement. I’m going to Orlando, Florida in the USA to work at Universal Studios for three months which will be a great experience.
Getting into university and then applying to work abroad involved quite a lengthy application and interview process, which I don’t think I would have been successful with if it wasn’t for the skills I learned on the college’s HND course. During the course we looked at interview techniques and applications/CVs that I believe helped me to achieve a successful result.
I’ve also helped the Xtra Team at college with several events that they’ve held and even organised my own event which raised money for a local guide dogs charity. All in all I’d definitely recommend studying at college, especially the HND in Business as it opens up so many avenues of opportunity. ”
