Rediscover learning with an Access to Higher Education course
Adults looking for a change of direction or to boost their career chances in a field they’ve always worked in can make the most of the university-level courses we offer.
If you’ve been out of education for a while, getting back into study mode can seem daunting but Louise Lowe, Victoria Jones and Sarah Newton told us how the Access to Higher Education Course has helped them to rediscover their passion for learning.
Vicky - I’ve always wanted to work in social services, specifically child protection. I currently work as a waitress, I love it but it’s not a career. I want to have a satisfying career to provide for my daughter and I can see everything coming together thanks to this course.
Sarah - I have three children and since school/university is now taking up more of their time it’s freed up some of mine. To be honest I felt a bit of a spare part at home which really got me down. My daughter is a real inspiration as she is now at university so I thought, why can’t I do that?
Louise - I’ve been through quite a journey to this point. I lost my job, my foster son sadly passed away and I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis all within a year. I felt so lost and was desperate for something to reignite my passion for what I did before and this course has definitely done that.
Sarah - Coming to college was the most terrifying thing I’ve done in my life. As soon as I stepped through the doors I was immediately put at ease, I felt comfortable and it wasn’t as daunting as I thought it would be. As a result my confidence has soared. I’ve made so many new friends here, it’s a scream. My whole mind feels like it’s alive again after being out of education for so long. I want to make my children proud of me, inspiring them to achieve what they want out of life.
Sarah - I’ve always fancied a career in teaching so I thought I’d go for it! Thanks to this course I’ve now got an offer to do an English degree. I want to teach Further Education, essentially teaching people like me, who are returning to education.
Louise - Plain and simple, I’m just happy. I’ve got hope for the future, I’ve rediscovered my passion for learning and the field I’m interested in. In previous years I always worried about the financial side of returning to learning but I’ve made use of the Advanced Learner Loans which has opened up so many new opportunities for me, so I wouldn’t let money worries deter you from studying and getting to where you want to be.
