Public Services course helps Nathan launch his Royal Navy career
Nathan Hartley had his heart set on joining the Royal Navy so he chose to study for a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services to give him the best chance when it came to applying. He told us:
“I was really keen on joining the Royal Navy but I knew I needed to develop skills that would make me a stronger applicant and help me to develop my career in the force. It’s paid off as I now have all my confirmed training dates to join the Royal Navy and I have my heart set on becoming a submarine engineer. The navy have offered to send me to university to study engineering which will give me a huge range of transferable skills for my navy career and beyond.
I’ve really enjoyed the practical elements of the course at college to be honest. Fitness sessions have been a big favourite of mine and have sparked a real passion in my free time. When I joined college I was a 44 inch waist, I’m now a 28 inch waist.
I also enjoyed the radio skills modules too, learning the theory and then applying it in practical scenarios. Our residential trip to Linnet Clough even allowed me to teach others the radio skills I learnt. All of the tutors have been great because they’ve drawn on their own experience in the forces or public service roles.”
