College is helping Sarah to see a positive future
Sarah Hayes is a Level 1 Beauty Student who has been studying at Chesterfield College since September 2016. She says that coming to college has literally changed her life.
Sarah was struck down by an illness that attacked her immune system when she was in year 10 at school. After a long spell in hospital she became anxious about mixing with people in case she picked up more illnesses. Her anxiety became very severe to the point that her whole life was affected.
“I missed the whole of year 11 and needed to be home schooled. I missed my prom and started to lose touch with friends because my anxiety made me a recluse. I would sit in my bedroom all day every day with the curtains closed. I lost a lot of weight and my health was suffering.”
“After my GCSEs My mum encouraged me to try a course at college but I was really reluctant at first. I didn’t know how I would manage to be here every day when I couldn’t even leave my room. I am so glad she gave me that push though. I came to a taster day at college so I could see what the course would be like and my tutor gave me lots of reassurance about the support that would be available to help me cope with college life.”
“Since I have started, my life has quite literally changed. I can see a positive future now. I am loving the course and my confidence has grown so much. I still have my bad days but when I do I know that college will support me to make sure I don’t miss out on my studies.”
“Spending time with customers in the Looks Salon seemed like an impossible thing to do when I first started because I was so nervous and worried but I now have the confidence to chat to people and it feels great. I think it is because of the work that the tutors at college do that I am at this stage in just a few months of being here.”
“An added bonus is that I have a social life again because I have made friends with the other people on the course. I am back to a healthy weight again and I am really enjoying learning new things.”
