Student sculpture takes pride of place at Chesterfield College
A striking sculpture designed by Chesterfield College art and design student Hannah Carter, age 18, is the latest piece of artwork installed as part of Chesterfield’s public art trail in the Percent for Art scheme. The sculpture has taken pride of place outside Chesterfield College’s new construction facility on Infirmary Road.
The sculpture was inspired by the role the railway has played in the town and combines that with the role education plays in shaping people’s lives. Her design is created from stone and metal, to subtly suggest railway tracks, and shows how education can take you on different journeys in life.
Hannah won a competition last year when she designed a sculpture which would help to complete the new development. She was one of 6 finalists shortlisted from 28 students who were given a brief to create designs that incorporated some of the decorative stones from the old building on this site and to incorporate the theme of the history of Chesterfield.
She told us: “It is amazing to see the finished sculpture in place. I pass it every day and it still amazes me to think that the idea I had all those months ago has turned into this piece of artwork that will be here for a lot longer than I am.”
“Although we get to work with lots of materials in college, the experience of creating a permanent installation of this size is not something you usually get to do as a student. It could take years to be commissioned to create a piece of public art like this so it’s really exciting to be able to do it at this point in my life. Making the sculpture come to life gave me great experience of balancing some of the technical limitations of working with metal with artistic design ideas but I am really pleased with the result and I look forward to seeing it take on a life of its own as it ages. ”
With a piece of public art of this size and impact to add to her portfolio Hannah is sure to make an impression when she starts applying for universities and as her career develops.
