Hospitality students' theme nights are a fundraising success

Hospitality students raise £1400

A group of BTEC hospitality students has raised £1400 for charities close to their heart by organising special theme nights in Taste, Chesterfield College’s restaurant at the Infirmary Road campus.

As part of their course, the catering and hospitality students were asked to organise a series of special theme nights to raise money and demonstrate their event organisation skills. Students chose a range of charities from Make a Wish Foundation to Cancer Research and hosted everything from Italian themed nights to Medieval Banquets, where customers were served with a 3 course dinner and a complimentary cocktail.

Students were asked to come up with a theme, plan menus, promote the events and manage the catering and hospitality team on the night.

One student, Natalie King, organised a Masquerade Ball last term and raised over £328 for Crohns and Colitis UK. She said:

“I really enjoyed organising the event and learnt so much about everything that goes into planning and promoting this kind of activity. It’s a great experience that I know employers will be impressed with when I start looking for jobs after my studies. Not only that, it feels great to be able to give the money we raised to charities.”

Janet Lacey, Catering and Hospitality Tutor said:

“We run these theme nights regularly with different groups of students because they give them a brilliant insight into event planning and customer service. I am so proud of this group of students for raising so much money.  I’d like to thank all of the people who supported them by coming along to the events. Without paying customers we couldn’t give our students the experience they need for working in the hospitality industry and we wouldn’t be able to raise so much money for worthwhile causes.”

“We are hoping to reach £2000 mark with the Theme Nights that are running with the new group. They are proving very popular! There are 4 more left this term and we only have a few spaces left at one of them, the Medieval Banquet on 12th May raising money for the charity Mind.”
