Apprenticeships open up a world of opportunities for Hannah
Choosing an apprenticeship with Kamili, a company who work with partners across sub-Saharan Africa to provide independent safari experiences, has quite literally opened up a world of wonderful opportunities for 20 year old Hannah Cade from Melton and her boss is delighted with the positive impact she has had on the business.
When Hannah started her apprenticeship nearly 2 years ago she never imagined that learning on the job would take her half way across the world, ignite a passion for wildlife, conservation and lead onto further studies in business.
Hannah told us:
“I had never thought about working in tourism but now I am captivated by the industry. I started looking into apprenticeships when I realised the best way for me to learn was in a practical situation where I could get real life experience. I wouldn’t have the chance to organise an exhibition in Cape Town or visit lodges in Africa to get a better understanding of how to promote safaris to customers if I was sitting in a classroom. This type of experience has made me better at my job and given me the incentive to continue with my studies to higher level business qualifications”
Hannah’s role as a marketing assistant apprentice involved; maintaining the web site, social media management, producing and sending e-shots to customers, editing the quarterly company magazine, briefing designers and event management.
Tim Henshall, Managing Director of Kamili, the growing business that has recently expanded says that Hannah is a real asset to the business. He told us about his decision to take on an apprentice and what impact it has had:
“As the business was growing it was clear that we needed more staff and I was looking for team members with the right attitude to help us develop. I had seen ads about apprenticeships and something about them appealed to me. I learnt on the job and I wanted to give someone the chance to develop in the same way.
“With the support of Learning Unlimited we found Hannah and have seen her grow throughout her apprenticeship into a very confident asset to the company. She is self-motivated, driven and produces a very high quality of work. We made sure we set tasks that matched her skills and she has always amazed us with the way she tackles her role, taking it to the next level. She is now working on developing our social media strategy and is in charge of analysis.
“We exhibited at a very important trade fair in Cape Town last year and Hannah organised our role in this with a meticulous approach which got us fantastic results. We took Hannah with us to oversee the set-up of the exhibition and spent 5 days visiting some of the lodges where customers stay when on safari so that she could get a better understanding of the product and services we were selling
“We have seen the value of doing this in the work she has produced since her return and we know we have ignited a passion in her for wildlife and conservation. Later this year she will be returning to Africa to work on community projects for a month."
