Marathon organisers say thank you to Chesterfield College Students
National cancer charity Kids 'n' Cancer, the organisers of Chesterfield Marathon, are hosting a special event at the college on Thursday 4th February to thank the volunteers, including students from the college, who helped them to make the 2015 marathon happen.
The 2015 Chesterfield Marathon saw over 1,000 runners take to the streets of Chesterfield, taking part in the full marathon, half marathon, relay event and fun run, raising thousands of pounds for hundreds of local and national charities.
Student volunteers worked with others from across the community including church and Scout groups, Friends of Eastwood and Holmebrook Valley Park and a team of staff from Tesco Extra to providing extra support to organisers.
Julie Harrington from Kids ‘n’ Cancer told us:
“Volunteers are a vital part of the Chesterfield Marathon. Without a certain number of marshals out on the course the event couldn’t happen. The more volunteers we have the more we can keep costs down which means the charities we support, including Kids ‘n’ Cancer and lots of other local charities, get a bigger share of money to help them make a difference to peoples lives
“The students from the college provided enormous support last year helping at various points along the course, including in the town centre and out at drinks stations. One student helping me in the baggage and registration area was an absolute life-saver. He turned up earlier than expected and was so willing to help out as much as he could, helping to take some of the stress out of the day.
“We are very pleased to be working in partnership with the college again this year, and hugely value their support. We're looking forward to more students stepping forward to volunteer at this year's marathon which takes place on Sunday 2nd of October. It's a great opportunity for students to get involved and support this fantastic event in our town. Volunteering is very rewarding and is a great thing to be able to put on your CV or job applications.”
