National Careers Week: 5 reasons why work experience is important
1. A chance to explore your options
Work placements are a great opportunity to try out lots of different roles and gain an insight into multiple industries. During your placement you may realise that working in an office environment isn’t for you, or likewise, you may prefer a job that doesn’t involve being on your feet all day.
2. Opens your eyes to the variety of roles available
Having the chance to venture out into the world of work can open up lots of potential opportunities that you may have never considered before. For example you might already know you want to work in engineering, but might not know what kind of roles are available out in industry.
3. Stand out on your CV and UCAS application
Having experience in a professional environment will no doubt stand you in good stead when applying for a job. Not only does it show you have made a commitment to something, but it also shows an employer that you are serious about starting work. A placement could also give you that all important reference you need for your CV.
4. Gain new employability skills
During a work placement you will be able to improve on your existing skill-set and gain new skills such as team building, customer awareness, problem solving, communication skills, time management and numeracy and IT skills.
5. Invaluable experience in your chosen industry
And finally, a work placement will provide you with a realistic view of the world of work, and allow you to experience first-hand what it’s like to work in your chosen sector. This is invaluable experience to have when applying for your dream job.
