How can it help you?
ALS provides support for learning over and above normal class contact hours. It helps you to progress and successfully achieve your qualification.
Support Services include:
- Literacy and numeracy support.
- Help with study skills.
- Support for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysphrasia or dyspraxia
The Deaf Support Team provides:
- Staff qualified to BSL Level 6 (Signature)
- Qualified Communication Support Workers (Edexcel/Signature)
- Specialist Notetakers
- English Support
- Audio-visual materials transcribed/subtitled
- Learning resources modified
- Teacher of the Deaf 1-1 support

Assistance for students with a visual impairment including enlarged print, brailed literature and computer software.
- Personal assistance if you have a physical disability or long term illness.
- Support for disabilities such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Hyperactivity, Aspergers and the Autistic Spectrum.
- Concessions in examinations (subject to examination board regulations).
Helping you succeed
Learning Support Tutors work in partnership with Personal Tutors and Programme Managers to make sure that you can complete the course successfully. The Learner Services team will talk to you about the support that can be offered; this includes help from your tutors and resources such as computer software packages and materials used in the class. Your Personal Tutor will meet with you to review your progress at regular intervals. At this review you will talk about the support you are getting, your progress on the course, your career aspirations, your attendance and your behaviour.
How to access support
If you have a disability or learning difficulty or you received support when you were at school, please tell us at or before the interview. We will then organise a meeting with one of the Learning Support Team who can talk to you about support arrangements and facilities.
Once you are on a course at College, your support needs will be discussed by your Personal Tutor. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask for help if you need it.
Over 700 students every year receive additional learning support so you won’t be alone. Many students welcome the extra support because they are able to work through things at their own pace and do well in their assignments.
