Engineering and Construction Industry Week proves smash hit

Our Engineering and Construction students enjoyed their industry week last week, gaining real insight into the working world of a wide range of local, national and international employers.

The week consisted of guest lectures, workshops, employer fairs advertising employment opportunities and trips out to working sites for students in engineering, professional construction and construction trades, plumbing and electrical installation.

Trips were taken out to the United Cast Bar Foundry, MSE Hiller sites, Steve Holland sites, William Davies sites, the Mansfield Academy Playground Project. Whilst students took so much away from the week in realising just how many career opportunities are available in industry, employers also had the chance to inspire the next generation of their workforce.

Bill Marsh, Operations Director at Pinelog Ltd, producer of luxury lodges, explains, “It’s great to have the opportunity to explain to the next generation of talent just what our business is about, the sheer scale and breadth of the roles available, from carpenters/joiners to electricians, gas installation and more. We open our new multi-million pound facility in Sheepbridge, Chesterfield at the end of this month so we’re looking to recruit as much local talent as we can through programmes such as apprenticeships.

“We want to give each employee a multi-skilled, high quality, training experience that obviously results in them gaining their qualification but also provide the opportunities to expand their skillset into other areas of expertise. For example, an apprentice may start out as a painter/decorator and then eventually decide to learn about electrical installation. We want our apprentices to understand what goes into each high-quality lodge, from start to finish. Their really are so many opportunities for this new generation to take advantage of in the construction and engineering industries.”
