Course overview

This is a full time course designed to enable you to gain GCSEs in Maths and English as well as study subjects, including Psychology and Human Biology. It will introduce you to the fundamental study skills needed for continuing education and help with your personal and academic development. Modules include:

  • GCSE English
  • GCSE Maths
  • Study skills
  • Biology
  • Sociology
  • Psychology

Methods of assessment

You will be assessed by written exams, presentations, written assignments and practical work.

Who is this course for?

The certificate can be studied over 24 weeks full-time (Sep-March). This enables you to concentrate on the GCSE element of your course in the final weeks leading up to the exam.

You will be required to attend college lectures and seminars for 5.5 hours per week for the certificate, and commit to additional time for your GCSE Maths and/or GCSE English (each GCSE is 3 hours per week for 30 weeks), subject to passing screening tests.

Entry qualifications

No previous or formal qualifications necessary but we would recommend you complete the Level 1 Adult Numeracy and Adult Literacy before this course. You will also need to complete a screening prior to starting the course to assess English and maths skills. You will also need to pass an internal curriculum interview prior to starting.

What other experience will I gain?

Self-study and research is a key element of any course so you will be expected to dedicate time to your studies outside of the classroom.

Where will this lead?

Successful completion of the Level 2 certificate will allow you to go on to study the Access to Higher Education (Level 3) programme to prepare for university-level study or lead to improved employment prospects.
