This course is validated by University of Derby

The Certificate (Level 5)/Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Level 7) are both nationally-recognised teaching qualifications which will allow you to teach in a variety of learning environments such as Further Education colleges, schools, adult and community education, prisons and public services. The course is designed to develop practical teaching skills and broaden your understanding of the contact in which teaching is carried out.

  • Teaching observations
  • Curriculum studies

Entry requirements:

  • GCSE English and maths at grade C or above (or Level 2 equivalent)
  • Access to a minimum of 50 teaching hours per year of the course (if a full teaching role) within a 20 mile radius of the college
  • Level 3 qualification in the area you wish to teach (Certificate in Education)
  • Level 6 qualification in the subject you wish to teach (Postgraduate Certificate)

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for those who want a career in teaching. To successfully complete this course you will need to undergo a minimum of 100 teaching hours over the two year course, therefore you will need a placement in a school or other educational setting such as a college. All applicants are subject to approval from the University of Derby.

The PGCE is studied part-time over 2 years. You will be required to attend college lectures and seminars for 3 hours per week in the evening. You will also need to dedicate some time to self-study and research.
