Course OverviewLearning Unlimited in Derby now offers the Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering. It’s an ideal option for anyone who has completed a Level 3 engineering qualification and wants to take their career to the next level.
The Level 4 HNC offers students a broad introduction to engineering via mandatory core units of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units. This means the course can be tailored to the needs of the employer.

The general engineering pathway consists of core units including:
- Engineering Design
- Engineering Maths
- Engineering Science
- Managing a Professional Engineering Project
- Mechanical Principles
- Electrical and Electronic Principles
Additional units can include:
- Workshop Practices
- CAD for Maintenance Engineers
- Engineering Management
- Electrical Machines
Applicants will need to possess one of the following:
- Level 3 engineering qualification (at Level 3 or above)
- One full A Level in a relevant subject
- A relevant Level 3 qualification
- Extensive work experience
- Practical exam
- Practical assessments
Students who successfully complete the HNC may progress onto the Level 5 HND course, which takes a further 14 months to complete.
