Course Overview

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity will be varied course in terms of content and will have multi-sport approach. There will be strong links to sports coaching, fitness and sport in general through a variety of modules. This course is linked to multi sports and you will participate and coach in a variety of sports for example football, hockey, rugby, netball, cricket and tennis.

This course will provide you with an understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the impact various factors such as exercise, alcohol and diet can have a person’s health. You will explore the structure and function of various body systems such as skeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and how these respond to different types of exercise. You will look into the fitness aspects relating to sport through fitness testing and how to apply your understanding of testing results to an effective training programme. You will get the chance to expand your coaching and instruction through delivering the training programme. This content of this programme is broad and looks at many elements associated with sport and coaching covering topic relating to psychology, nutrition , analysis of sport and sports development to name a few.

Employment in the North East region in the sports sector is predicted to expand by 2.2%. Growth in vacancies are expected in Physiotherapy, Sports therapy, Sports Coaching teaching over the next three years.

Course Content

Delivery of this course will be over four days per week with a mixture of practical lessons, theory lessons and online tasks. The majority of your lessons will take place at Queens Park Sports Centre where you will have access to the classrooms, sports hall and astro turf and the main campus on Infirmary Road. As part of your course you will be required to undertake 30 hours of work placement you will be supported to access opportunities through your tutors at the college.

There are no exams for this course. The course will be assessed through course work where you will be tasked to produce assignments and booklets and verbal podcasts and participation in discussions individually and as part of a group. There will be practical assessments for a number of modules.

Entry Requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including either maths or English.

Assessment Methods

Progression

The course can lead to university through gathering UCAS Points to study a sports related degree. Completions of this course could lead into careers as a professional sports coach, community sports coach, PE teaching, sport development officer, teaching assistants as well as role within sport science!
