Course Overview
This award is for you if you're an experienced Learning Support/Teaching Assistant employed or volunteering in a school setting, working alongside the teacher at Key Stage 1-4 (working towards the National Curriculum) and have a range of supervisory responsibilities within the school. It is aimed at learners working in support roles within schools and colleges. It provides you with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable you to gain an understanding of elements including children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare, and communication and professional relationships.The benefits of being a teaching assistant:-

Course Content
The topics you will cover include:
- The structure of schools and colleges
- Health and Safety
- Safeguarding
- Child and young person development
- Professional relationships
- Supporting learning activities; including English, maths and ICT
- Assessment for learning
- Personal and professional development
- Supporting positive behaviour
As well as the above topics, you will also be working with children and young people in a real work environment. You will have the opportunity to build and develop your skills and confidence that will help you to progress on your chosen career path.
Entry Requirements
It is essential that you are well established in a school setting as an employee or a volunteer and have at least 6 months continuous experience. You must be working or volunteering a minimum of 12 hours a week. Settings can include primary schools (infant and junior), secondary schools and special schools’. 2 references, an enhanced DBS (can be purchased through college if necessary) and a completion of a taster assignment will also be required.
Assessment Methods
- We offer flexible assessment so you can demonstrate what you have learned in a way that suits your needs and at times that suit you. You will be supported throughout by your tutor and a dedicated assessor.
Progression
Successful completion of this course provides a sound foundation on which to build further advanced/specialist qualifications. Progression to other Level 3 progression courses and higher education is possible. Employment opportunities include working directly with children in a school or college environment.
