Course Overview

Building upon your existing skills this course is best for you if you want to enter the Plumbing industry either through an Intermediate Apprenticeship or progression to the Level 3 qualification in Plumbing. The course is intended as a Substantial Vocational Qualification. It requires the completion of knowledge and practical assessments designed to provide you with the basic skills and understanding to allow a progression route to completion of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, Domestic Heating or Level 3 Plumbing Foundation qualification.

The qualification is intended for 16-19 year old learners who are in full time education. It is for someone who wants to work in the building services engineering industry and envisages a career as a Plumber or Plumbing and Heating Engineer. The qualification may also be suitable for other learners, such as adults, who are interested in plumbing or changing their career path.

During this course you will be asked to carry out work experience that is relevant to the subject you are studying. This is with an external company and allows you to put what you will learn in the classroom into practice. It will also help you to develop a variety of different skills. Upon completion of the course and the industry placement, it can also help you to secure an apprenticeship, employment or assist you with your application for university. We recommend that you start thinking about your placement as soon as you have applied for your course and consider potential employers you may want to undertake the placement with to help you get the most out of the experience. Course Content

The qualification requires you to complete 10 units (all of which are mandatory) which include the assessment of both practical skills and knowledge. The topics covered are:

  • Understand and carry out safe working practices in Building Services Engineering
  • Understand how to communicate with others within Building Services Engineering
  • Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within BSE
  • Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within BSE
  • Understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
  • Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques

Entry Requirements

To do this course you will need three GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English and maths and a Level 1 Diploma in Plumbing.

Progression

Upon successful completion of this course you can progress on to the Level 3 course, employment in the industry or alternatively you can apply for an Intermediate Apprenticeship.
