Course Overview

We offer one pathway for this qualification: Media and Games Design. This introductory course provides a solid foundation to develop your skills and understanding within media, with direct correlation and linking to video game design and development. Throughout the course, you will develop understanding and skills within media and video games being the primary focus on these topics. Therefore, if you are a fan of video games and think you could potentially become a video game designer, then this might be the starting course for you.

Throughout the course you will be introduced to the world of game design at a beginner’s level, looking into units that consist of promotion, product design within both 2D and 3D, animation, concept art, followed by exploration of a final project, which is student focussed. You will be learning new software skills as well as skills within art and media.

Course Content

Modules include:

  • Introduction to materials, processes and skills in video games
  • Introduction to contextual research in video games
  • Introduction to communication skills in video games
  • Solving 2D, 3D and time-based creative problems
  • Work experience
  • Personal project

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade F/1 or above including English or maths, or a relevant Entry Level 3 qualification. A portfolio demonstrating either art, media or games related content.

Assessment Methods

  • This course is 100% coursework which comprises of digital portfolios and practical work. There are no exams.

Progression

Upon successful completion of this course you could progress to a Level 2 Diploma in art and design, a Level 2 within media, and a Level 2 within digital technologies. This will then lead to our level 3 in games development should you wish to continue on the games pathway. There also options for apprenticeships with learning unlimited.
