Course Overview

The Access to HE Diploma (Science) aims to develop your knowledge and skills in a range of different science professions. You can expect to develop your understanding of key scientific principles and learn how to conduct scientific experiments.

During your time on the course you will explore different applications of science and enhance your problem-solving skills through a variety of different assessments whilst developing your subject knowledge.

You will also be provided with the opportunity to look at different areas of science, including biology, chemistry and physics, as well as computing and mathematics.

You will be required to complete a practical assessment unit as part of this Diploma.

Upon completion of the Diploma you will have developed transferable skills such as problem solving, working with others, interpreting information and numeracy.

Assessment methods will include:

  • Individual presentation to a group/audience
  • Role-play/simulation
  • Observation of student practical ability, i.e. practical experiments
  • Written tasks/questions and answers, i.e. time-constrained assessment

Entry Requirements

Mandatory requirement: GCSE English grade 4/C (or equivalent, e.g. Level 2 Functional Skills, Level 2 Adult Literacy).

Recommended requirement: GCSE Maths grade 4/C (or equivalent, e.g. Level 2 Functional Skills, Level 2 Adult Numeracy). Or a willingness to work towards, alongside the Access to HE programme.

Upon successful completion you can progress to the HNC/HND Applied Sciences (available at Chesterfield College). You can then choose to ‘top-up’ to a full degree by studying for an additional year to achieve a BSc. Natural Sciences, BSc. Biology/Chemistry/Physics, BSc. Engineering, or BSc. Motorsport Engineering.
