Students from the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Children’s Learning, Play and Development tell us how the opportunities they have had at Chesterfield College have helped them to find out more about the career options they want in the future and secure their places at university.
I’ve always known that I wanted to work with children so this was the perfect course for me. I hate exams and prefer doing coursework so again this course suits me down to the ground. I like the practical side of learning too so all of the placements, actually working with children, have been really enjoyable.
College helps to open your eyes as to what careers are actually out there. Lots of people come in to the course thinking that teaching is the only route to go down but in actual fact you gain transferable skills that open the door to a variety of occupations. I want to work with babies but had I not come to college I wouldn’t have anywhere close to the confidence needed to work with them as it can be daunting.
I’ve done four placements during the course, all with different ages of children which has helped me to choose the age range I want to work with in my career. I actually started the course thinking I’d want to become a primary school teacher, however after my placements I’m confident I want to work with younger ages than that.
I’m now going to Leeds Trinity University to continue my studies and then I want to progress into working in either nurseries, schools or social work. My tutors were really helpful when it came to putting together my application.
I’m going to university too, at Nottingham Trent. I think my work placements really boosted my application as they remarked how impressed they were with all my experience.
