Chesterfield Students Against Spiking – Fight the Spike

Our Sixth student, Clea Kapadia, started a campaign that is open to the whole college with her friends Phoebe Haigh, and Ewan Beresford to raise awareness of spiking in Chesterfield.

‘‘Spiking is a massive issue everywhere, in Chesterfield particularly, it’s awful. Being an older student able to go out and being spiked myself a couple of months ago, I wanted to do something about it.’’ – Clea

This is a truly important issue that is affecting students and adults nationwide. We are proud of our students for making a stand and starting those important conversations to raise awareness around college and in the local community.

We spoke to Clea about how they have been raising awareness and what their plans are to ‘Fight the Spike’

“We decided to do the Monsal Trail walk as we wanted to have a walk that we could continue on for miles without any struggles. We started at Bakewell, after a quick pit stop at the co-op and seeing some adorable ducklings (and their mum). We walked to the Litton Tunnel, near Cressbrook, where we decided to turn around as it started to get dark and soon after it started pouring down with rain! Despite the weather, we powered on and ended up walking an incredible 10.28 miles. It took us just over 3.5 hours.

We did the walk to start fundraising for the ‘Stop Spiking Chesterfield’ campaign. With the money raised, we aim to make merchandise to raise awareness of spiking as well as making drink covers and other things for safety on nights out.

We do have a “go fund me” set up and we will have more fundraisers over the year to help us get to the target of £1,000. With this money, we can give away drink covers for free and come up with even more things to make us all safer on a night out.”

Clea’s mission is to make sure spiking is taken more seriously. The more awareness and the more conversations around the signs to look out for, the better. Clea and Lisa France run a session every Wednesday in room W131 to talk about their campaigning and to make more students aware of the dangers around spiking.
