Beth Crew is already gaining experience in the industry

Beth Crew, a Level 3 Performing Arts student, has progressed from our Level 2 Media Makeup course onto a Performing Arts course. She is hoping to go on to a career using both qualifications to her advantage. All the experience she is gaining in both departments will allow her to strive for her dream career in TV and film.

Beth crew - performing arts level 3

I got opportunities to perform on West End and dance in Disney Parades.

“I have always loved performing arts. I have been dancing since I was three and from there it kind of spiralled into musical theatre. When I was twelve I joined Stagecoach Performing Arts in Chesterfield, through there I got opportunities to perform on West End and dance in Disney Parades. I just found my love for it. You can be anyone and you will be accepted.

I want to be a professional Makeup Artist for TV and film.

I chose Chesterfield College as I want to be a professional Makeup Artist for TV and film but I also want to do a bit of Performing Arts. I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into one. I know a lot of people say you have to choose one but I want to do both.

It’s not just about being on stage, it’s about confidently walking into a room.

At school, I just studied GCSE dance. I like dancing more but singing came afterwards as I struggled with my confidence a bit. I chose college so I could do all three (dance, singing and acting). Before I went onto the performing arts course, I studied Level 2 Media Makeup. I was looking to progress but unfortunately, due to numbers, it got dropped. I wanted to do another course that interested me and that would build my confidence. Performing arts was that for me. It’s not just about being on stage, it’s about confidently walking into a room and being able to talk to complete strangers about why they should choose you. It’s about confidence.

This is my first year on this course, I only want to do one year as I want to go back to the Level 3 Media Makeup course. My big dream is to be a Makeup Designer for major films. It has given me experience working in the performing arts environment. There are lots of crossovers. Last year we did the makeup for the actors/actresses in the Grease production. This year I have helped out with hair and makeup. I have got quite a creative brain so I am always looking to help out where I can.

The next group I want to join is an operatic society.

I am looking to do a degree in Media Makeup (wigs, special effects, prosthetics and body painting). I’m excited to see where to course will take me and what opportunities will arise. The next group I want to join is an operatic society. I am wanting to carry on with a performing arts society whilst doing my degree to still keep that passion and path alive.

You definitely have to throw yourself into the course.

I am enjoying how accepting people are on the performing arts course. You definitely have to throw yourself into the course to get the most out of it and not be embarrassed. I have grown in confidence this year. I enjoy moving and I love the creative side of it. I have been wanting to do media makeup since I was twelve. I became interested after a careers day at secondary school. I love that there’s no right or wrong, as long as you are creative and passionate you’ll succeed.

I am proud of how my confidence has grown.

The tutors have been great on both courses. The Performing Arts tutors and assistants are so lovely and are supportive to help you grow with knowledge and confidence as well. I am proud of how my confidence has grown. The beauty tutors were great, they inspired me to want to go and get a degree in media makeup to work on film and tv.”
