Chesterfield College students have converged at the Chesterfield Hotel for the 2010 Student Conference. Hundreds of students attended the event to represent their views on various aspects of College life, including Citizenship, Respect, Equality and Diversity, Health and Well-being.
The main aim of this, the College’s fourth annual Student Conference, is to ask learners what works, what doesn’t and what could work better. This ensures that the College has the feedback required in order to ensure policies and services are designed around the needs of young people in the area.
Attendee’s had the opportunity to discuss, amongst other issues:
- College Safeguarding Policies
- Facilities
- Access
- Transport
- Programmes and Projects
- Equality and Diversity
- Citizenship
Visitors to the Student Conference also visited various stalls set up by Year 1 Health Studies students. These stalls provided information and guidance on issues such as sexual health, alcohol abuse, drug misuse, how to quit smoking and healthy lifestyles.
Further information on healthy diets and exercise was also provided by the College’s fitness suite staff that also ran a rowing exercise challenge throughout the day.
Brian Carroll, Head of Learner Services at Chesterfield College, says, “The benefits of listening to and acting on the views of learners have been widely accepted. Provision is better planned and delivered, learners are more motivated and engaged, achievement is greater and cohesion is stronger in organisations that involve learners in decision-making processes.”
