An award ceremony at Chesterfield College has recognised the outstanding work of 30 students as part of the Connected project – a programme for young people, aged 16 to 19, who haven’t managed to find a job, course or training.

Young people on the project did a ten week vocational ‘taster’ in a subject of their choice, including catering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty. A majority of the students then went on to start a course at the College.

Neil Hudson, 16, who joined the project on an auto repair course says, “I have made loads of new friends, had good fun and the experience has helped me make up my mind to carry on towards a qualification”.

In conjunction with Connexions Derbyshire, Chesterfield College has been delivering part of the Connected programme since September 2008. Chris Jones, Manager of the Connected project says, “The project has been very successful, it’s great to see students doing well and above all enjoying themselves.”

Christine Ward, Connected Co-ordinator at Chesterfield College explains, “The course aimed to provide the students with an enjoyable learning experience which gave them an insight into how a course at Chesterfield College could provide them with excellent vocational skills to boost their personal development”.

Connected is funded by the European Social Fund and the Learning and Skills Council, and delivered by Connexions Derbyshire Limited.
