Left to right: Kadie Cooper, Daniel Bown, Emma Brookes and
Brian Kavanagh celebrate their success
“We are very proud of the hard work staff and students have put in
to achieve such fantastic results, and we would like to wish all the
students leaving us every success for the future” said Kevin Hickey,
Deputy Principal Learning and Standards.
Legal eagles head for top universities
Emma Brookes with three grade A’s secures a place to study
Law at Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Emma Brookes
Emma, who was also joint winner of the Sociology essay writing
competition held by Cambridge University, is one of three students
gaining three grade A’s and going to study Law. Kadie Cooper
will study at Durham University and Nicola Hoggard at
Nottingham Trent University. This summer, Emma completed work
placements with Rotherham and Sheffield City Councils to further her
practical experience of Law. Emma and Kadie were also part of the
Social Mobility Foundation programme “Ladders to Law” where gifted
students from less privileged backgrounds are mentored by practising
solicitors.
Kadie Cooper didn’t do well at school and they had predicted
Bs and Cs for her A level results. Kadie decided to join
Chesterfield College rather than 6th form because there was more
variety and independence at College. Kadie said;” I have really
enjoyed being at College and it is fantastic to open my results and
have 3 straight A’s. That means I have got my place at Durham
University and will be going to study Law, eventually I want to be a
Barrister.”
Award winning Brian makes the grade
Brian Kavanagh has achieved A Level passes whilst being the
sole carer for his younger brother. Brian has been awarded the
Helena Kennedy Foundation Award for students overcoming great
difficulties to complete their studies. The award includes a bursary
of £1,500 towards university costs and Brian will be presented with
the award at the House of Lords on October 26. Brian said that
Chesterfield College had “turned his life around”.
Brian is now going
onto to study a B.A.(Hons) in Sociology.
Steven Whitehead achieved grade A’s in Maths and Chemistry
and a grade B in Biology. Steven, formally of Deincourt School will
study Chemistry at Leeds University and is one of a number of
students who will be the first person in their family to attend
university.
Daniel Bown An A and 2 B’s at A level have guaranteed Daniel
his place at University of Sheffield to study Aerospace Engineering.
Daniel said;” I have had a great time at College, it has been
challenging – tutors have pushed me to make sure I work hard but
they have also really supported me when I needed it.
“I want a career in motorsport and this course offers the chance to
do that, but also it gives me wider scope if I want to change
career. Potentially I could work in maritime, aircraft or automotive
engineering”.
Toasting Alison’s success
Alison Hardy has spent the last 2 years travelling over an
hour a day to get from her home in Pinxton to Chesterfield College,
but it has been worth it said Alison. “I am so pleased with my
results and they are much better than I thought they would be. I
can’t wait to start Uni’ and will probably have a celebratory drink
of champagne tonight”. Alison leaves the College to join Nottingham
Trent University to study Criminology after passing all 3 of her A
Levels. |
