Finding Employment by ‘Making the Connection’
Date: 23rd July 2009

Chesterfield College is helping unemployed people find jobs through a new initiative in partnership with Job Centre Plus and Making the Connection.

The initiative ensures that people who are out of work get the opportunity to undertake tailor-made training carried out by Chesterfield College that will guarantee them a job interview in a relevant career area.

Job Centre Plus refers unemployed people to the programme ‘Making the Connection’ which aims to engage with local employers. A tailor-made training programme is then devised by Chesterfield College, which caters for the requirements of both learner and employer.

Already the initiative has achieved success, with local employer Gunstones Bakery offering eleven jobs to people who have completed a course through the partnership, and of nine learners who have studied for a Gateway to Health and Social Care course, six have been employed in care homes and three have gone on to further training.

Chesterfield College Partnership and Standards Manager, Pat McGowan said,
“This partnership has been really successful in finding people work, which is no mean feat during a recession! It is proof that our partnerships work, and that our training can open doors to a new career, even in difficult times.”
