Sports Students win Scholarship to Coach in USA
Date: 17th April 2008

Three determined Sports Development students have been selected to take part in the national Challenge Sports coaching scheme, after successfully completing a rigorous qualifying round in Doncaster.

Natasha Davies, Ashley Rhodes and Matthew Robinson completed a fifteen-minute coaching session and an interview before being selected to take part in a twelve-week sports coaching scheme in the USA.

Each year, students on the NVQ Level 3 Sports Development programme are given the opportunity to win a place on the USA Coaching Scheme through Challenge Sports, and once students are in the USA, there are further opportunities for sports related work.

Tutor, Neil Cluxton said,
“I am really proud of the achievements of our students, and it is good to know that students are successful as a direct result of this course. This offers a tremendous opportunity for them and hopefully there will be many more students following in their footsteps in years to come.”

The successful trio will be attending further training sessions in the UK before flying out to America in June, where they will coach boys and girls of all ages and abilities at summer vacation camps across the country.

Natasha, who is hoping to coach children in New York, plans to start a career in football coaching following the scheme, and has considered staying on in America, or returning there next year to continue working.

Natasha said,
“This is what I’ve always wanted to do, and coming to College has given me this fantastic opportunity. The course has been great, I’ve had lots of help and the tutors are fantastic. I hope that this will lead to a career in coaching.”
